My painting style is figurative; representational yet relishing the pure joy of painting and the beautiful and ever surprising things that oils, mediums and a few painting tools can do.
This feels like a time of rapid growth as a painter. I am learning so much about technique, yet, perhaps thanks to growing older, I also feel more relieved of the constant tug toward realism. I paint from references; from life where I can, though mostly from photos, edited and/or combined to facilitate the idea I am following.
My work deals with memory, retelling stories and making visual connections between events and perceptions. Sometimes poetically reimagining history. In most of my works the subject involves people within a suggested narrative. My paintings represent a condensed moment, suggesting action that preceded or followed the subject matter.
I also use a language of private visual symbolism - objects and elements alive with history and association. I have a fondness for portraiture, often painting self-portraits.
For my painting process, I rely on visual, rather than verbal concepts to start a work or, if there is an idea I want to pursue, it is broad and overarching rather than specific to each painting.
More often than not, an idea or significance clarifies itself through the physical process of painting and visual decision making. This is the joy of being inside the maze and painting my way out.
